WeMoney vs Billroo: how the two young Australian money apps compare
Both were built in Australia this decade and both run open-banking feeds, and they still make opposite choices. WeMoney is free with ads and has credit scores; Billroo is paid-only and has AI insights and a couples tier. We compare the two on the things that genuinely differ.

The short version
- WeMoney is free with ads, debt-first, community-driven, with credit scores from two bureaus and 1.35 million-plus claimed users.
- Billroo is paid-only after its trial, budget-first, AI-assisted, with a couples tier and a 4.7-star iOS rating from a smaller base.
- Choose WeMoney to attack debt with company; choose Billroo for clean AI-assisted budgeting, especially as a pair.
WeMoney and Billroo are the two youngest serious names in Australian consumer finance, and they set out to solve different problems.
WeMoney set out to help Australians pay off debt, and built a free, social app with plenty of feedback. Billroo set out to make budgeting pleasant, and built a paid, quiet app with AI assistance.
Before we referee: we build Kleev, a money app that competes with both, so factor that in. Every claim below traces to primary sources checked in July 2026.
What is WeMoney?
WeMoney is a Perth-built financial wellness app aimed at debt. Its store listing is titled "Pay off debt faster".
The free, ad-supported app syncs effectively any Australian account, shows free monthly credit scores from two major bureaus, detects subscriptions, tracks goals, and puts a community feed around all of it.
WeMoney holds an Australian Credit Licence, which enables consolidation offers, claims over 1.35 million Australians, and raised a A$12 million Series A in April 2025 with Mastercard among the investors. It suits people paying off debt who want regular feedback to keep them going.
What is Billroo?
Billroo was bootstrapped by finance creator Queenie Tan of Invest With Queenie and her partner Pablo, starting from about A$30,000 of their own savings. Its web app went live in late 2024 and its mobile apps followed in October 2025.
Billroo offers deliberately simple budgeting with AI on top: CDR bank feeds via Fiskil, custom categories and budget cycles, net worth, tax-deduction highlighting, and AI insights metered by monthly credits.
Billroo's iOS app held a 4.7-star rating from 111 ratings in July 2026, and the company reported passing 5,000 users in mid-2025. It suits budgeters who would pay a little for uncluttered software and a couples option.

Which pricing model suits you better?
This is the clearest difference between them. WeMoney's free tier is genuinely useful and genuinely commercial, and ads, partner promotions and consolidation offers are how the credit scores and feeds get paid for.
Billroo charges instead: A$9.99 a month for Pro or A$98.99 a year. In exchange the app contains no ads and sells you nothing except optional AI credit top-ups.
Billroo's terms do describe a limited free account after the trial lapses, though it loses bank connections, so in practice Billroo is a paid product.
Ask yourself a plain question. Would you rather pay A$9.99 a month, or put up with ads and partner offers?
Do Billroo's AI features earn the subscription?
Billroo's AI does real work: automatic categorisation, spending insights, smart budgeting reports and tax-deduction highlighting. The last of those comes with a sensible reminder to confirm anything with a tax agent.
The credit system gives you 30 credits a month on Pro and 50 on Plus, with packs from A$12 if you run out. It is an honest way to cover the cost, and it does mean your most interesting features are rationed.
WeMoney's current marketing makes no AI claims at all. Its categorisation runs on enrichment from Experian and Mastercard, and its 2025 raise set aside funds for AI development that hadn't surfaced as shipped features when we checked.
If AI insight is what you're shopping for, Billroo is the only one of this pair selling it today.
How do they compare on scale and staying power?
WeMoney has the scale: a claimed seven figures of downloads, a 4.54-star iOS rating across more than 5,000 reviews, institutional backing including Mastercard, and a credit licence that its business model depends on.
Billroo is growing from a much smaller base. It is bootstrapped and was reported to be approaching profitability in 2025, its founder has roughly half a million followers who serve as the marketing channel, and its iOS rating is 4.7 from 111 raters.
Neither looks likely to disappear, and they carry different risks. WeMoney's model depends on offers you may not love, and Billroo is a small young company whose product is still filling out.
Subscription detection, for instance, is something we found no evidence of, despite the bill-ish name. Weigh up which uncertainty sits easier with you.

The verdict, by user type
- Paying down debt and wanting momentum: WeMoney. Scores, dashboards and community, all free.
- Budgeting as a couple: Billroo. The two-user Plus tier has no WeMoney equivalent.
- Wanting AI help with categorising and insights: Billroo. WeMoney ships none today.
- Not willing to pay anything: WeMoney. Billroo is effectively trial-then-subscribe.
- Allergic to ads and cross-selling: Billroo. The subscription is the whole business model.
- Wanting a web app included: Billroo. WeMoney's desktop view sits behind Pro.
And if neither quite fits
You're on kleev.ai, and we build Kleev, so here's the one openly-biased paragraph. Kleev runs no ads and uses Anthropic for AI, as Billroo does, and it goes a step further on privacy.
Kleev has no bank connection at all. You upload CSVs yourself and they parse in your browser.
Both of these apps treat property as a single net-worth line. Kleev is built around investment property, with loans, offset what-ifs and cashflow.
If that describes your situation, look at Kleev's spending features, the full Australian roundup, or the direct matchups with WeMoney and Billroo.
The fine print
- This article is general information, not financial advice. Kleev describes your own data and does not give financial advice.
- Facts and prices were verified on WeMoney's and Billroo's published pages and app-store listings in July 2026 and may change.
- We build Kleev, a competing money app; the bias is disclosed and the facts are checked.
Common questions
Is WeMoney or Billroo cheaper?
WeMoney, at the entry point: its base app is free (ad-supported) and Pro costs A$9.99 a month. Billroo advertises no ongoing free tier; Pro is A$9.99 a month or A$98.99 a year and Plus is A$14.99 a month or A$149.99 a year, after a 14-day trial that takes a card upfront. If you never pay, WeMoney wins by default. Prices as at July 2026.
Do WeMoney and Billroo both use open banking?
Yes, with a difference in the fallback. Billroo connects Australian banks through Fiskil under the Consumer Data Right, read-only and credential-free, and supports CSV upload for anything else. WeMoney holds its own CDR accreditation and falls back to Yodlee credential-based screen-scraping for banks CDR doesn't reach, which extends coverage at a privacy cost.
Which app has AI features?
Billroo. AI is its centrepiece: automatic categorisation, personalised spending insights and smart reports, metered by monthly credits (30 on Pro, 50 on Plus, extra packs from A$12). WeMoney's current marketing makes no AI claims, though its 2025 funding round earmarked money for AI development.
Can couples use WeMoney or Billroo together?
Billroo has the built-in option: Plus covers two users with full shared access for A$14.99 a month or A$149.99 a year. WeMoney lists no couples or sharing feature on its published pages. For shared budgeting, Billroo is the clear pick.
